Member based Organisations Climate Resilience Symposium: Driving Collective Action for Environmental Stewardship

On June 14th, 2023, the halls of Trias offices echoed with enthusiasm and collaboration as the Family Farmer Climate Change Resilience Symposium unfolded. Hosted for Member-Based Organizations (MBOs), this event served as a melting pot of ideas, initiatives, and collaborations aimed at fortifying the resilience of small-scale family farmers and entrepreneurs across East Africa, notably in Tanzania and Uganda.

The symposium centered around the trifecta of people, planet, and profit, spotlighting climate-friendly practices derived from collaborative efforts between Trias and supported organizations in the environmental sphere. With participants from various sectors and Trias regional and country directors from eleven countries, the symposium became a nexus for knowledge exchange, experience sharing, and fostering a collective dialogue on the indispensable role of MBOs in environmental stewardship.

The event commenced with warm greetings from Ms. Ritha Tarimo, Trias Country Coordinator, and the esteemed Guest of Honor, Arusha Regional Commissioner Hon. John Mongella. The Commissioner lauded Trias for orchestrating this platform and emphasized collaborative efforts between the government and Trias in addressing climate change challenges. He stressed the need for shared responsibility and assured ongoing governmental support for sustainable environmental stewardship.

Trias East Africa and partner presentations painted a vivid picture of ongoing programs in Uganda and Tanzania. From environmental conservation to technological solutions fostering sustainability, these presentations covered a gamut of strategies to combat climate challenges, including innovative approaches like beekeeping and planet-cooling methodologies.

The heart of the symposium lay in the Open Space Knowledge Sharing sessions. Participants delved into seven distinct groups, each exploring critical facets of climate resilience. The recommendations that emerged were as diverse as they were insightful, encompassing:

  • Climate Justice
  • Circular economy
  • Natural-based solutions
  • Climate finance mechanisms
  • Climate communication strategies
  • Urban sustainability and food systems
  • Climate inclusion by empowering women, youth, and marginalized groups

The symposium sparked key questions, prompting conversations on sustainable development strategies, sensitizing governments on urbanization effects, enabling family farmers in understanding and participating in carbon credit schemes, and addressing challenges of plant invasion in relation to climate change.

Audience takeaways emphasized the pivotal role of recycling, inclusion, climate finance, and effective climate communication as cornerstones for future action and collaboration.

In the spirit of collaboration, the audience emphasized multistakeholder partnerships, inclusive climate-based solutions, reforms in environment policy, and financing environmental initiatives as crucial avenues for collective action.

The MBOs Climate Resilience Symposium was a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and shared responsibility in tackling the intricate web of climate challenges. As these recommendations echo across borders, the symposium stands as a milestone—a testament to the commitment of MBOs and partners towards a resilient, sustainable future for all.
